Therapists use hijama to treat a wide range of health conditions including chronic pain, headaches, digestive issues, high blood pressure, menstrual complaints and skin problems

Hijama, also known as medicinal bleeding, is a healing technique that has been used in the Islamic world for more than 1400 years, as well as in other cultures including ancient Egypt, China and Greece. It is a type of wet cupping therapy that involves sterilising the skin, making small incisions and placing cups on these incisions to draw out blood and toxins. It releases rigid soft tissue, loosens adhesions, lifts connective tissue and brings fresh blood, carrying essential minerals and nutrients for muscular health, to areas being treated.

The lifting action of the cups also stretches the muscles to treat myofascial trigger points, or knots. Cupping causes the body to release endorphins (natural painkillers) and other hormones such as serotonin, which helps the self-healing process.

Common conditions treated with hijama include:

  • Chronic pain, such as that associated with arthritis
  • Migraines
  • Back pain
  • Circulation disorders
  • Stress
  • Muscle recovery
  • Skin conditions such as acne and cellulite
  • Menstrual problems
  • Fertility problems
  • Digestive issues

Other recommended treatments may include:

  • Dry needling
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Ayurvedic medicine
